Mohsin Charania wins 2012 EPT Grand Final

The two main storylines heading into the 2012 PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) Grand Final Main Event final table were the presence of online poker legend Mohsin Charania and the last female standing Lucille Cailly. Sure enough the two players put on an impressive display of poker skill and ended up squaring off for the title heads-up.

I’ll cut right to the chase and skip ahead to the heads-up portion of the match, where Charania was hoping to cement his place in the poker world (and likely put himself in prime position for a sponsorship deal down the road) and Cailly was looking to become the first female to win the EPT Grand Final and join Sandra Naujoks, Victoria Coren, and Liv Boeree as EPT winners.

After the two cut a deal that would see each earn at least €1,000,000 the heads-up battle began, and was over within five hands, as Cailly picked-up A/K and Charania Pocket Queens and all the money went into the middle. Charania’s Queens would hold-up and the Chicago-area native hoisted his first major tournament title in the air.

The deal saw Charania guaranteed €1,150,000 and Cailly €1,050,000, with Mohsin holding a slight chip-lead over Lucille. This left a further €200,000 to play for, along with the prestige and notoriety that goes with winning the EPT Grand Final. The original payouts were set at €1,500,000 for the winner and €900,000 for the runner-up.

Here is a look at the final table payouts from the tournament:

1. Mohsin Charania – €1,350,000

2. Lucille Cailly – €1,050,000

3. Bernard Guigon – €545,000

4. Sergio Castelluccio – €400,000

5. Rodrigo Caprioli – €315,000

6. Michael Dietrich – €245,000

7. Clayton Mozdzen – €185,000

8. Daniel Gomez – €130,000

In other EPT Grand Final news, the €25,000 High-Roller event reached the final table on Monday, with EPT Super-High-Roller winner Justin Bonomo out in front of a stacked field that also includes Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, and Noah Schwartz. Here is a look at the chip counts and seating assignments of the eight remaining players in the High-Roller event at the EPT Grand Final:

* Seat 1: Philipp Gruissem — 990,000

* Seat 2: Igor Kurganov — 1,288,000

* Seat 3: Daniel Negreanu — 660,000

* Seat 4: Justin Bonomo — 2,202,000

* Seat 5: Max Lykov — 271,000

* Seat 6: Artem Litvinov — 331,000

* Seat 7: Noah Schwartz — 522,000

* Seat 8: Nathan Schoo — 387,000

The winner of the High-Roller tournament will be the fifth person to win over €1,000,000 at the 2012 EPT Grand Final, unless of course Bonomo wins as we already captured a €1,640,000 payday for winning the Super-High-Roller event! Other Million Euro prize-winners include the runner-up in the Super-High-Roller tournament, Tobias Reinkenmaier, as well as Lucille Cailly and Mohsin Charania who finished 2nd and 1st respectively in the EPT Grand Final Main Event.
