Sahamies comes up just short at EPT Barcelona

The final table of the European Poker Tour (EPT) Barcelona Main Event was a star-studded affair with representatives from the old school of poker and the new online poker generation in the form of John Juanda and Ilari “Ziigmund” Sahamies, but the two men would have vastly different experiences under the bright lights of the televised final table.

Juanda entered the final table as the second shortest stack out of the eight remaining players, and the chip-deficit would prove to be too much to overcome as he was the first player sent packing, ending his deep run in 8th place. From there the tournament became a one-sided affair as the other Fin at the final table; Joni Jouhkimainen went on absolute tear, skyrocketing to over 20 million chips while his opponents had less than 5 million each. Unfortunately for Jouhkimainen his run-good wouldn’t last through the dinner break, and upon returning from dinner (with Joni and countryman Ilari Sahamies in a very “festive” mood) he was practically doubling up his opponents, Sahamies and Ukrainian Mikalai Pobal at will.

Pobal made a crucial error during three-handed play, checking behind with the nut flush on the river (which cost him a round penalty), but proved to be the best player on the day, first taking care of Jouhkamainen and then “Ziigmund” who fell to the young poker pro from the Ukraine after two ill-timed bluffs, the latter of which saw him 4-bet shove into the Pocket Aces of Pobal.

Despite coming up just short this was Sahamies best showing in a major live tournament, and proves the online PLO specialist isn’t simply a one-trick pony in the poker world.

Here is a look at the final table payouts from the EPT Barcelona Main Event:

1. Mikalai Pobal — €1,007,550

2. Ilari Sahamies — €629,700

3. Joni Jouhkimainen — €404,050

4. Anaras Alekberovas — €301,750

5. Samuel Rodriguez — €230,900

6. Sinel Anton — €178,400

7. Antonin Duda — €125,950

8. John Juanda — €76,100

Overall the EPT Barcelona turned out to be a rousing success, with the €50K High-Roller tournament earning Dan Smith a massive payday of nearly €1 million, and the Main Event setting the record for the largest tournament in Barcelona history, with 1,082 entrants.

The PokerStars EPT will now move on to the second stop on Season, as it heads to San Remo, Italy, which like Barcelona is one of the hottest stops on the EPT tour, and is hoping to set a record of its own. The EPT San Remo tournament series will kick-off on October 3rd, 2012, and wrap-up on October 11th, 2012; the Main Event will take place from the 5th through the 11th of October.
