Wigg leads as bubble bursts at EPT Berlin

Day 2 of the PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) Berlin Main Event is in the books and with the money-bubble bursting towards the end of the day all of the remaining players are guaranteed some part of the €3,725,000 prize-pool. The day started with 329 players remaining after the two Day 1 flights, and the bust-outs came and furious throughout the day, with the money-bubble bursting along the way –a rare feat on Day 2 of an EPT Main Event.

A pair of former EPT Champions topped the leader-board at the end of Day 2: Leading the way into Day 3 of the tournament will be Season 6 EPT Copnehagen champion Anton Wigg, who edged out last year’s winner of the EPT Snowfest, Vladimir Geshkenbein, for the overall chip-lead: 695,000 to 675,500. But with 102 of the original starting field of 745 players still in the hunt, it’s a little too soon to be looking at the potential for the first ever repeat winner on the EPT tour.

One player hoping there is not a repeat winner is Vanessa Selbst. The Team PokerStars Pro finished with a respectable 345,000 chips on Day 2, and is looking for her first EPT victory. Selbst isn’t the only other big name still in the running; also coming back on Day 3 will be Season 6 EPT Berlin winner Kevin MacPhee, Jan Bendick, William Thorson, online poker legend Taylor Paur, JP Kelly, Stefan Huber, David Kitai, Anna Marquez, Will Molson, Kevin Iacofano, and Andrew Chen.

Here is a look at the Top 10 chip-counts at the end of Day 2 of the tournament:

1. Anton Wigg — 695,000

2. Vladimir Geshkenbein — 675,500

3. Mario Puccini — 604,000

4. Marc Wright — 585,000

5. Andreas Vlachos — 531,500

6. Cesar Garcia Domínguez — 526,500

7. Bahadir Kilickeser — 500,000

8. Zachary Korik — 450,000

9. Soren Vohrs — 429,500

10. Gereon Sowa — 421,500

Geshkenbein, a PKR Poker pro, is one of the most aggressive poker players in the game, and when he gets a large stack he is a very tough customer at the poker tables. Beyne as he is known online was the chip-leader at the end of Day 1a and has been rolling along since the outset of the tournament. A second EPT title would cement Geshkenbein’s place as one of the most talented young players in tournament poker.

The players will return to the poker tables on Thursday at Noon local time where the tournament is scheduled to play down to the final 24 players. Friday will see the field trimmed by 2/3, as the final table of eight players is decided, and on Saturday the Season 8 EPT Berlin champion will be crowned.
