2017 WSOP Main Event Champion Scott Blumstein Not Keen On Playing

From someone who was a considered a “nobody” on the professional poker scene, Scott Blumstein turned into a poker superstar after winning the 2017 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event in Las Vegas. The New Jersey poker player had to go through over 7,200 players and beat some of the best in the business before securing his first WSOP gold bracelet and taking home $8.1 million in prize money.

Prior to his Main Event win, Blumstein didn’t really seem to be the kind of guy that other poker pros would be threatened by. In fact, his one and only significant accomplishment as a professional poker player was in 2016 when he walked away with $199,854  after winning the $500 + 60 No Limit Hold’em – $1 Million Deepstack Kick Off tournament at the Borgata Summer Poker Open.

High Stake Events Not Appealing To Blumstein

The win at the Borgata Summer Poker Open not only gave him his biggest cash prize ever but also the confidence to shell out $10,400 and book himself a seat at the 2017 WSOP Main Event. That decision turned out to be a life changing decision for Blumstein and made him a multi-millionaire overnight.

However unlike a lot of poker players who continue to play high stake events after entering the big-league, Blumstein doesn’t really see himself as a high stakes poker pro. The lure of these big money events are not very appealing to him as he knows that this events are ultra-competitive and it puts a lot of stress and pressure on the player.

Blumstein explains that prior to his Borgata win; his main objective of playing poker was simply to get his bills paid because he was out of a job. He explains in a recent interview that he did not have any lofty poker goals like winning the WSOP Main Event and only took to playing poker because it provided him a means to an end. Since winning the WSOP Main Event, he has kept a rather low profile.

Blumstein Shares Great Advice For Bankroll Management

Blumstein did have a few words of advice for poker pros who want to make it big on the global poker circuit.  His advice is very different from what most poker pros say. Blumstein advises players to not focus on their main goal which is to win large cash prizes. This is because it will put a lot of unnecessary pressure on the player and distract them from performing at their best. Instead, he advises players to focus on the daily grind and concentrate on making money consistently.

This way, it relieves the player of the tendency to: look for a big win, play above their means, and put themselves at risk of losing money in high stakes games, which are difficult to win. Blumstein has not confirmed when he will walk away from professional poker or whether he will participate in the 2018 WSOP Main Event.
