Today marks the first tournament in the World Team Poker competition –a series of tournaments featuring eight different teams of poker players representing their country—with a $50,000 buy-in event taking place in Las Vegas Nevada, at the Golden Nugget Casino.

Coinciding with the launch, World Team Poker has announced the tournaments will be broadcast by Fox Sports Net (FSN) and will be aired as 13 1-hour telecasts.

With some of the biggest names in poker competing in the event, coupled with the national honor, the event should make for some very interesting television. The eight teams taking part in the first season are:
* Team USA captained Phil Hellmuth (Hellmuth later relinquished the captaincy to Doyle Brunson as a show of respect)
* Team China co-captained by Johnny Chan and David Chiu
* Team Vietnam captained by Men “The Master” Nguyen
* Team Israel captained by Eli Elezra
* Team England captained by Ben Roberts
* Team Australia co-captained by Jeff Lisandro and Antonus Gouga (Tony G)
* Team Brazil captained by Juliano Maesano
* Team Greece captained by George Kapalas

The 8-person teams will play a shootout style tournament, of a 3-Game Mix, with five tables featuring a player from each country at each table. Substitutions are allowed when the game changes format form No Limit Holdem, to Limit Holdem, and to Pot Limit Omaha.
