Online poker in Nevada becoming a reality

Earlier this year Nevada passed legislation that allowed the State Control Board and the Nevada Gaming Commission to draft regulations and standards necessary for online poker operators. According to Lipparelli, the legislature is likely to vote on the proposed measures in December, paving the way for online poker in Nevada as early as February 2012.

If the legislation passes the state of Nevada will begin accepting applications from online poker providers seeking a license to operate an intrastate online poker room in February. Because the UIGEA allows for intrastate and intratribal gaming the new Nevada law would not be in violation of the federal UIGEA passed in 2006.

According to Mark Lipparelli, Chairman of the State Gaming Control Board, the application process should favor companies that currently hold Nevada gaming licenses (casinos and other brick & mortar operators) since they have already been fully vetted by the State Control Board, whereas new licensees would have to undergo the months-long full vetting process. Existing companies will only have to prove they can limit play on their site to Nevada residents only who are of legal age to participate, giving them a huge advantage in getting off the ground much faster.

The news appears to make Nevada the guinea pig in the online poker trial, and realistically there is not a better candidate considering the state is known for the gambling Mecca that is Las Vegas, and the State Gaming Control Board is by far the most experienced.
