Time to turn away from the tables and towards the big screen with the release of a new poker themed hit movie just around the corner. November 22nd will see the film ‘Molly’s Game’ hit theatres all over the world, it has already gathered some hype and attention from critics with well-known film and TV review website ‘IMDb’ giving it a 7.2/10, which for any picture this far from release is a good omen.

The film is based on a true story and follows the makings of a former Olympic level skier known as Molly Bloom, who’s life turns from the world of sport to the world of gambling when she takes it upon herself to run an exclusive underground high stakes cash game. Molly continues this tirade of illegal gambling for a decade before becoming apparent to the FBI who mark her as a target, and eventually arrest Bloom for her crimes. The 26-year-old uses the exploits of poker and gambling to build an entire empire for the current big-named individuals and those of the upper class including; Hollywood celebrities, athletes, business tycoons and even the Russian mafia.

The cast alone is enough to draw a crowd and brew attention on opening weekend, some of the a-list actors include; Idris Elba, Kevin Costner, Jeremy Strong, Michael Cera, Chris O’Dowd and starring as ‘Molly Bloom’ herself is the well-known, Californian based, actress Jessica Chastain, who has starred in hits such as ‘The Martian’ with Matt Damon, ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ and ‘The Help’.

Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, the New York born writer is making his debut as a director with the launch of ‘Molly’s Game’ and if his ability to direct is anything like his writing capabilities then the film will be a success. In terms of the story and the plot, the critics who had the opportunity to view the film at the Toronto International Film Festival recently claimed that the movie has its small downfalls at time but overall holds its own as an entertaining Drama and Crime based picture. The casting was heavily praised at the festival, the majority of the actors delved into their roles well and fitted their parts, the strong female role played by Chastain was admired by those watching.

Rotten Tomatoes is another film review website that is extremely popular at the moment, the reviews can be quite intense and vicious at times however ‘Molly’s Game’ has so far received a 90% approval score which is quite impressive. The site is widely known and used among film and TV enthusiasts and so any activity will add to the movies’ appeal coming up to its release. If the film is a success then it could be profitable for both the film makers and the poker scene, the general appeal of gambling, and in particular poker games, is likely to increase meaning the possibility of more activity on popular online poker websites.
