Lithuania recognizes poker as an official sport

The Lithuanian Sports Poker Federation has been recognized as an official sports federation inside the country’s borders. The ruling opens the door for poker tournaments to be organized outside of Casinos in Lithuania, and the federation has wasted no time in announcing a tournament in Vilnius from April 24th-26th.

The reality is that poker is definitely not a “sport” as we know it, but if the only way to organize poker tournaments outside of Casinos is to place poker in the sport category than it is the right move. Poker is closer to being a sport as it is to being a gambling game; in the end skill carries the day, not blind luck, the only resemblance to gambling is that there is money involved in the outcome –although there is money involved in the outcome of Football, Basketball, and other sporting events; it’s simply not placed on the field/pitch/court for all to see.
