Nevada and Delaware are two of the three states in American that have legalized online gambling, the third being New Jersey. Nevada and Delaware entered into an interstate online gaming agreement in 2015 that allowed the two states to share the player pool in a bid to boost online gaming revenues, provide players with better competition and bigger prizes and allow online gaming operators to work with a bigger and more lucrative market.

New Jersey Joins Nevada and Delaware

When New Jersey legalized online gambling, the market did not perform as per expectations and fell well short of initial estimates. However New Jerseypreferred to stay out of any interstate gaming agreement as it had a bigger online gaming market when compared to Nevada and Delaware. The online gaming industry in the Garden State has improved significantly during the last 24 months and it has also been responsible for boosting the land based casino industry. Gaming analysts estimate that New Jersey’s online gaming industry will generate around $240 million this year from its 23 licensed online gambling websites.

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval, Delaware Governor John Carney and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie caught he online gambling industry by surprised when they announced on October 13 that the three of them had signed a multistate online poker agreement that will allow the three states to group their player pools and permit online gaming operators to offer their services in all three states subject to approval.

IT Platforms To Be Approved

The IT and software departments from New Jersey, Nevada and Delaware now have a big task at hand as they will have to review casino software and technology platforms from multistate operators and then decide if they are compliant to receive approval. The process has already commenced but no date has been given as to when it will be completed.  Online gaming operators currently allow only players physically resident within the state to access their websites. They will have to modify their geo-location technology to ensure that players in three states are authorized to access their online gaming platforms.

David Rebuck who is the director of New Jersey’s Division of Gaming Enforcement said that their IT team are prepared to review and approve gaming offerings and will wait for online gaming operators to submit their products and software for testing. The WSOP.com which is owned by Caesars Entertainment is the only provider at the moment to operate in all three states.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval said that gaming is one of the oldest industries in the state and it was important that Nevada continued to look for opportunities to maximize its potential by taking full advantage of technological developments and innovation. The multistate online gaming agreement will boost gross gaming revenues in all three states and thereby also increase gaming tax revenues for the states.

The multistate online gaming agreement stipulates that gaming taxes will be collected based on the tax percentage of the state in which the player is residing and playing from.
