O’Dwyer follows up EPT Final Table with WPT win

It was the kind of poker trip that most people can only dream about, but rising tournament star Steve O’Dwyer put the finishing touches on a trip to Denmark that saw him final table the EPT Copenhagen Main Event and then win the WPT National Main Event, the first WPT tournament to be held in the country.

Since it was a National Series event the tournament does not count as an official WPT Championship, but O’Dwyer, who has been on absolute tear since the middle of 2011 will take the victory nonetheless. So you’ll also have to bear with me on the details of the tournament since it was only covered by Danish poker news sites (so Google translation has been used for the following details).

O’Dwyer took a huge chip-lead into the final table, possessing in the neighborhood of 40% of the total chips in play at the six-handed table, but Martin Tonnensen, who started the final table in 2nd-place would have been an overwhelming chip-leader himself. The two chip-leaders combined for over 4 million chips, while the bottom four players had just over 1.5 million between them.

Here is a look at the chip counts at the start of the final table:

1. Steve O’Dwyer — 2,636,000

2. Martin Tønnesen — 1,524,000

3. Kenneth Laursen — 532,000

4. Jan V. Sørensen — 443,000

5. Justin Lund — 377,000

6. Claus Uhrskov — 272,000

O’Dwyer was up against an all-Danish final table, but in the end it would be the two chip-leaders who would battle for the title in heads-up play. The final hand saw O’Dwyer get his chips into the middle holding Pocket Ten’s, and his opponent Martin Tonnensen (who refused a deal with O’Dwyer earlier in the battle) called with A/9. Tonnensen was unable to outdraw O’Dwyer, and the American was crowned the first WPT Denmark Champion.

Here is a look at the final table results from the tournament:

* 1: Steve O’Dwyer – 893,960 crowns (about $158,000)

* 2: Martin Tonnesen – 490,140 crowns

* 3: Claus Uhrskov – 339,960 kroner

* 4: Jan V. Sorensen – 225,030 kroner

* 5: Justin Lund – 175,710 kroner

* 6: Kenneth Laursen – 138,720 kroner

The victory is just the latest solid result over the past six-months for O’Dwyer. O’Dwyer’s run started with a win at the 2011 Bellagio Cup in July, and also includes a second place finish at the 2011 EPT London Championship, a second place finish at the 2011 WPT Venice Championship, and now a win in Denmark. Remarkably, every single cash O’Dwyer has during that period of time has been a Top 10 finish, with nine cashes for over $40,000. During the streak O’Dwyer has pocketed nearly $1.5 million; not bad for 6-months of work!
