2013 WSOP Countdown: Players to Watch Part 1

2013_schedule_carouselEvery year I put together a list of poker players to watch at the World Series of Poker, so before I get into this year’s 10 selections let me recap the performance of the players that were chosen by me in 2012 and see if any of them came through:

1. Scott Shelley – 1 cash at the 2012 WSOP

2. Ondrej Vinklarek – Zero results

3. Dan Kelly – 2 cashes and 1 final table at the 2012 WSOP

4. Tommy Vedes – 5 cashes and 2 final tables at the 2012 WSOP

5. Noah Schwartz – 2 cashes at the 2012 WSOP

6. Matt Marafioti – 3 cashes and 1 final table at the 2012 WSOP (and multiple controversies)

7. Russell Carson – Zero results

8. Max Martinez – 1 cash at the 2012 WSOP

9. Fred Goldberg – 4 cashes at the 2012 WSOP

10. Taylor Paur – 2 cashes at the 2012 WSOP including a 33rd place finish in the Main Event

Ok, so my 2012 predictive powers were obviously off (not a single bracelet among the 10 players and only four final tables), but I will claim victories for my selections of Tommy Vedes and Taylor Paur, as well as Matt Marafioti, since I said Players to Watch and not Players that would perform well, and Marafioti was definitely someone to watch! Hopefully 2013 will be a better year for me in terms of prognostication, and so without any further adieu, here is a look at my 10 choices for Players to Watch at the 2013 WSOP:

* #1 Daniel Rudd – Since he has a shortened version of my last name I’m a big fan of this guy. The fact that he can play poker also helps too, so I’m really hoping Daniel Rudd makes the trip over to the US for the 2013 WSOP.

* #2 Taylor Paur – I’ve been picking Paur for three years now, so eventually he’s going to come through for me! In 2011 Paur cashed six-times in the WSOP, and last year he binked a 33rd place showing in the Main Event, let’s see what he can do this year.

* #3 Casey Jarzabek – BigDogPckt5s has been crushing online tournaments all year, so I have a feeling this will be a good year for him at the WSOP, and finally break through on the live tournament scene.

* #4 Jackie Glazier – With most of the attention landing on Live Boeree, Vanessa Selbst, Vanessa Rousso, and so on, lost in the shuffle is Jackie Glazier, one of the top Australian poker players. Glazier proved she has what it takes to excel at the WSOP after a runner-up showing in the 2012 WSOP.

In Part 2 of this series I’ll look at six more players to watch in the 2013 WSOP.
