66 players remain as WPT Championship enters Day 3

Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las VegasYesterday I had the crazy idea in my head that the World Poker Tour (WPT) $25k Championship would better last year’s attendance mark since it attracted nearly 10% more players on Day 1 than the 2012 running. Well, once again I was wrong, and the tournament fell short of last year’s final tally of 152 players by six players (the WPT Championship allows late registration up until Level 8 on Day 20).

Still, the 146 registered players created one of the biggest tournament prize-pools of the year, and the winner of the tournament will walk away with over $1 million. But it should also be noted that the WPT Championship is basically little more than a high-roller tournament at this point, with attendance and prize-pool numbers BELOW some of the $25k buy-in high-roller tournaments that take place at tournament series like the PCA and EPT Grand Final.

What this will mean for the future of the $25k buy-in championship is unknown at this point, since there are no lo9nger amateur/semi-pro players willing to plunk-down $25k for a shot at the title. Instead we are seeing only the best of the best compete in the tournament, and with little in the way of an edge the number of pros who play in the event will continue to decline.

That being said, there is still a tournament that needs to be played, and by the end of Day 2 over half the field had been eliminated, leaving just 66 players left heading into Day 3. As expected the remaining field is basically a who’s who list of poker pros, with superstar players like Antonio Esfandiari, Phil Hellmuth, Erick Lindgren, Daniel Negreanu, Jason Mercier, and Scotty Nguyen still in the hunt. There are also 24 former champions still in the mix, an absolutely incredible number considering only 66 players remain in the entire field.

Here is a look at the Top 10 chip-counts heading into Day 3:

1. Mike Linster – 744,000

2. Dan Shak – 617,300

3. Antonio Esfandiari – 536,100

4. Steven Silverman – 513,20

5. Amir Babakhani – 491,000

6. Jake Cody – 453,500

7. Richard Harrock – 399,600

8. Chino Rheem – 396,500

9. Rocco Palumbo – 395,200

10. Will Failla – 386,000

And here is a look at the payout schedule for the Season XI WPT Championship:
