Countdown to the 2012 WSOP: The Rookies

Posted by Steve Ruddock on May 25, 2012 Posted in Poker News | No Comments »

Every year a handful of poker superstars (usually from the online world) turn 21 and decide to partake in the biggest event in poker, the World Series of Poker. Some of these players manage to hit their stride right out of the gate, while others struggle to the bright lights, long days, and sheer chaos that is the WSOP.

In this article I’m going to take a look at four Rookies at the 2012 WSOP that are entering the tournament series with the most hype, and the best chances to do well. I’m sure there will be plenty of other WSOP first-timers who rise to prominence this summer, but these four players are definitely the early favorites for the Rookie of the Year crown.

Viktor Blom

The Rookie everyone is most excited about has to be Viktor Blom. The man who rose to poker prominence thanks to his ultra-high-stakes online play a few years back has gone from a poker enigma, to perhaps the next big thing in poker. Isildur1 as he is known online, seems to have turned a corner over the past year or so; no longer seeking out the highest stakes games regardless of the opponent, Blom now plays reasonable stakes (reasonable for a high-stakes poker pro) and has even shown some tournament acumen, winning the 2012 PCA Super-High-Roller tournament, and recently booking back-to-back wins in the PokerStars SCOOP series.

Needless to say, Blom will likely be the most talked about WSOP Rookie since Tom Dwan.

Oliver Spiedel

Speidel has had a remarkable 2012 tournament campaign thus far, starting with a win at the Aussie Millions in January. Since then the Melbourne native has gone on to final table an ANZPT Main Event and an APT Main Event. The 2012 WSOP could mark his first tournament cash in the United States.

Harrison Gimbel

I don’t know if Harrison Gimbel is going to participate in the 2012 World Series of Poker, but considering this kid won the PokerStars PCA back in 2010, it’s been a long-time coming for his 21st birthday! Gimbel is still active on the poker scene in his native Florida (where 18 gets you into casinos) but having been unable to play in the bigger tournaments has kept Harrison under the radar of mainstream poker fans. The 2012 WSOP could very well be his time to shine.

Dominik Nitsche

German phenom Dominik Nitsche has already built-up an impressive resume throughout Europe cashing in dozens of events. But his biggest score thus far was in South America, where he took down the LAPT Mar del Plata Main Event in 2009. In 2011 Nitshce booked two wins in Cyprus, both worth over six-figures, and he’s also got a World Poker Tour final table under his belt.
