Poker players have a tendency to keep their hands and secrets to themselves but there are a few exceptions. Daniel Negreanu is considered by many to be one of the greatest poker players in the history of the game. Negreanu has made it a habit to publish his goals on his blog fullcontactpoker.com every year and is also very transparent in letting the public know how he performed at the end of each year.

The Canadian poker pro has released his top 10 list of poker goals for 2018 and has also been very candid in speaking about his performance in 2017 and how he compared against his 2017 goals.

Negreanu Did Not Have A Great 2017

Negreanu sent out a tweet saying that he cashed $2,792,104 in 2017 and asked his followers if they thought he spent more or less when compared to what he cashed in. More than 65 percent of his followers believed that he had spent less than the amount he cashed but they were wrong.

Negreanu who has more than $35 million in career prize money and is ranked in the number one spot for all-time prize money spent a total of $2,874,164 on buy-ins and cashed out $2,792,104, which meant he had a loss of $86,140. He played a total of 71events across 2017 which meant his average buy-in was around $40,481.

While he did suffer a loss in 2017, it was nevertheless a lot better than 2016. Negreanu played a total of 49 events in 2016 and his average buy-in was around $31,558. He finished 2016 with a loss of $1,246,693. However, the poker pro is not too worried about his losses.

In a statement, Negreanu said “I think my 2017 was a good illustration of the illusion that players cashing for $2 million in a single year is a great accomplishment. In the old days, before super high rollers, you could all but guarantee that cashing for $2 million would mean the player had a winning year. Well, the truth is, if a player plays the full high roller schedule and cashes for $2 million, they are all but certain to have had a losing year, and that’s before expenses.”

Top 10 Goals For 2018

Negreanu is not letting his losses impact his positive expectations for 2018. The Canadian poker pro has set lofty goals for the New Year, just like he always does. Some of his goals for 2018 include closing the gap on poker pro Phil Hellmuth and getting to 115 WSOP cashes; winning a Super High Roller even and finishing the year in the top 30 of the Global Poker Index.

Negreanu also wants to take his total career prize winnings past $40 million, finish at the final table for the One Drop or SHRB, continue to keep the number one spot on the all-time money list, win another WSOP bracelet and finish 2018 with a profit of $2 million.
