David Johnson Wins GUKPT Blackpool

David Johnson has won the GUKPT Blackpool 2010, taking home a prize of £465,000 ($110,000) and beating a tough field of 246 other players.

The 8th leg of GUKPT (Grosvenor Casino UK Poker Tour) in Blackpool was the penultimate tournament of this year’s tour.  The final, which is a £2,500 buy-in event at Victoria Casino, London, will take place from November 25th to the 28th.  Whoever tops the GUKPT tournament leader board rankings will than win the £20,000 1st place prize and become named the GUKPT Player of the Year!  Currently David Johnson sits 1st in the leader board rankings with 441 (previously 316) ahead of Alli Malu’s 385.

The 2010 GUKPT Blackpool £100 No Limit Holdem Event included more than £465,000 in prize money in addition to lots of media exposure and coverage.  However it was all over over pretty quickly by the third day as David Johnson took home the crown after going heads up with Richard ‘Strummer9’ Herbert.

Other finalists on the day included Kevin Parkes – who was the first to be eliminated after running into Andy Bradshaw’s QQ.  Lee Taylor went busto in 9th after his losing to Musson’s AK; he took home £4,900 for his troubles.  Ryan Wood fell in 8th place when his pocket tens crashed against Aces, Rob Boon’s AK then lost to Musson’s pocket Jacks, and then after some seemingly quiet period Andy Bradshar busted out against Johnson’s pocket Kings.  Herbert then cracked Ellwood with pocket Queens, Dylan Randles went bust with A4 against Musson’s pocket Jacks (again!), and heads up action started once Vinnie Musson finally got outdone by Herbert’s pocket sevens.

The heads up action between Richard Herbert and David Johnson was intense.  What began as a 2:1 chip lead in Herbert’s favour soon turned into a more fair battle as Johnson shoved all-in half an hour later only to be folded by Herbert, from now on giving him the lead.  Johnson continued to pile the pressure in what was probably one of the shortest lived days in GUKTP history with Johnson flopping top pair against Herbert’s second pair, proudly taking home the title and increasing his live winnings to around $170,000.
