Failla amongst chip-leaders at WPT Borgata

Emanuel “Will the Thrill” Failla has been on quite the heater in recent weeks, first capturing the WPT Legends of Poker Main Event title, followed by a very deep run in the 2011 Partouche Poker Tour Main Event where he finished in 14th place. Now Failla finds himself back in the US (at the WPT Borgata Poker Open) and amongst the Day 1a chip-leaders, sitting in 4th place on the leader-board.
Failla isn’t the only big name player who finished the day in the Top 10 at the WPT Borgata Poker Open, joining Failla were Vanessa Selbst (2nd place) and Darren Elias (3rd place). In all, 460 players registered for Day 1a of the tournament, and with the multi-entry format (which allows players who were eliminated on Day 1a to try again on Day 1b) it’s almost a guarantee that the tournament will best the record for the largest WPT tournament in history in terms of total entries –currently held by the 2010 WPT Borgata and its 1.042 players.
Of the 460 original entries, roughly 245 managed to survive the day, and will join what is suspected to be a substantially larger field from Day 1b when the two starting flights are combined on Tuesday. The $3,500 buy-in tournament was the first WPT event to move to the smaller buy-in format (this is now the third year the tournament has featured a $3,500 buy-in), and has historically drawn much larger fields on Day 1b of the event.
Here is a look at the Top 10 chip counts at the end of Day 1a at the 2011 WPT Borgata Poker Open Main Event:
1. Abe Korotki – 260,100
2. Vanessa Selbst – 198,675
3. Darren Elias – 191,200
4. Will Failla – 189,500
5. Eirc Salinas – 184,225
6. Adam White – 180,625
7. Jesse Cohen – 177,825
8. Jason Min – 174,000
9. Andreas Freund -163,525
10. Daniel Colman – 160,000
In addition to putting himself in a good position for a deep run in the event, Abe Korotki also pocketed an additional $5,000 for being the Day 1a chip-leader –the same $5,000 bonus will also be awarded to the Day 1b chip-leader. Day 1b will get started at approximately 11 AM on Monday.
With tournament officials anticipating up to 1,400 entries, the total prize-pool could swell to an impressive $4.5 million, which would easily surpass the roughly $3 million prize-pool from last year’s tournament –won by Player of the Year contender Dwyte Pilgrim.
