Greg Brooks wins WPT LA Poker Class

With a lineup that included a former WPT champion, a three-time WPT champion and two-time bracelet winner including the 2001 WSOP Main Event, as well as a former Online Poker Player of the Year winner, nobody was probably more shocked that Gregory Brooks won the 2011 World Poker Tour LA Poker Classic than… Greg Brooks!

Despite his relative inexperience in live tournaments, Brooks is no greenhorn in the poker world, as he is a successful online poker player who plays under the screen-name ‘MyNameIzGreg’ and has plenty of live poker experience even if it’s not in major tournaments.

Brooks managed to best Vivek Rajkumar, Carlos Mortensen, Steve ‘gboro780’ Gross, as well as tournament veteran Darryll Fish on his way to capturing the LA Poker Classic title, which included fending off a very game Rajkumar during heads-up play.

Mortensen was looking for an unprecedented fourth WPT title –to go along with his two WSOP bracelets—and a win would vault the longtime pro into the Top 5 on the all-time money list. Alas, Mortensen would have to settle for third place when his flopped top pair lost to Brooks’ flopped straight and flush draw, as he rivered a flush.

Here is a look at how the final six players fared at the final table of the WPT LA Poker Classic:

1st: Gregory Brooks – $1,654,120
2nd: Vivek Rajkumar – $908,730
3rd: Carlos Mortensen – $640,680
4th: Amir Lehavot – $421,680
5th: Steve Gross – $304,000
6th: Darryll Fish – $235,350

Just hope Gregory Brooks doesn’t go play roulette and blow all his winnings now. I hear its been done before.
