Ivey among Day 1 survivors at WPT LA Poker Classic

One of the most popular poker tournaments in the world got started on Friday as 523 players registered for the World Poker Tour Season X LA Poker Classic. Among the entrants were some of the biggest names in the poker world, including Phil Ivey, making the WPT LA Poker Classic his first US tournament since Black Friday.

By the end of the day only 396 of the original 523 player field was left standing; however that number could change before Day 2 commences as the LA Poker Classic is allowing late-registration up until the beginning of Day 2.

A quick perusal of the leader-board shows that virtually every big-name in the poker world is currently in Los Angeles, including 2010 WSOP Champion Jonathan Duhamel, 2011 WPT $25k Champion Scott Seiver, 2010 Card Player Magazine Player of the Year Tom Marchese, and online poker legend Shaun Deeb, all of whom managed to finish Day 1 with a Top 10 chip-count.

Some other big names still in the running include, Tony Dunst, Joe Hachem, Phil Collins, David Sands, Will Failla, Daniel Alaei, Jason Somerville, Eric Baldwin, Erick Lindgren, Phil Hellmuth, Steve Gross, Jason Mercier, Faraz Jaka, Vanessa Rousso, Andrew Lichtenberger, Matt Gianetti, Erik Seidel, Gavin Griffin, Sam Stein, Joseph Cheong, Christian Harder, Carlos Mortensen, David Williams, JC Tran, Barry Greenstein, Mike Matusow, Tim West, Mike Sexton, Men Nguyen, William Reynolds, Phil Ivey, Brian Rast, Jennifer Harman, Chau Giang, Phil Laak, Prahlad Friedman, Zachary Clark, Shawn Buchanan, Kara Scott, Jonathan Little, Matt Stout, Matt Marafioti, Eugene Katchalov, Greg Mueller, David Chiu, Liv Boeree, Dan O’Brien, John Racener, Dan Shak, Jeff Madsen, Allen Kessler, Maria Ho, Noah Schwartz, Matt Waxman, Mike Mizrachi, and Blair Hinkle.

Eliminated on Day 1 were Olivier Busquet, Vanessa Selbst, Xuan Liu, Andy Frankenberger, Daniel Negreanu, Kathy Liebert, and Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier. I apologize to anyone who feels they should be on the above two lists, but as you can see virtually all of the 539 entrants are fairly well-known players, so I went through the list pretty quickly!

Here is a look at the Top 10 chip-counts heading into Day 2 of the tournament:

1. Michael Rocco — 156,200

2. Tuan Phan — 141,500

3. David Pham — 103,175

4. Tyler Patterson — 99,250

5. Jonathan Duhamel — 98,950

6. Eric Cloutier — 98,000

7. Scott Seiver — 96,575

8. Tom Marchese — 95,000

9. David Baker — 92,000

10. Shaun Deeb — 92,000

Day 2 will kick off at noon local time, and as I stated earlier, anyone wishing to register for the tournament has until then to head to the Commerce Casino with the $10,000 entry-fee in hand. Play will begin on Day 2 with 200/400 blinds and a 50 chip ante, so late registrants will still have quite a bit of room to maneuver.
