Loni Harwood makes WSOP history with a win in Event #60

wsop bracelet2Day 1b of the World Series of Poker Main Event started with a tribute to Doyle Brunson that included a bronze bust of the poker legend and Doyle doing the honorary “Shuffle Up and Deal” announcement before taking his seat to play in the WSOP Main Event –despite proclaiming his retirement from tournament poker before the series. But on a day when nearly 2,000 players sat down to play in the Main Event it was the conclusion of the preliminary tournaments that stole the show, as Loni Harwood picked-up her first WSOP bracelet and the second open-event bracelet by a woman at the 2013 WSOP.

After a really slow start to the WSOP the ladies made a late push and picked-up two Open-Event bracelets for the first time since 2004 (when Annie Duke, Kathy Liebert, and Cyndi Viollete all won open-event bracelets) after Dana Castaneda and Loni Harwood won Event #54 and Event #60 respectively.

Harwood had a very strong WSOP, quietly putting together six cashes, three final tables, and now a WSOP bracelet. Her performance could very well go down as the best by a woman in WSOP history. Harwood’s three final tables matches Cyndi Viollete’s WSOP record, which was set in 2005 when Cyndi finished 7th, 7th, and 2nd on her way to cashing five times that year. Harwood finished 6th, 4th, and 1st at her three final tables.

Her victory also puts her in the WSOP Player of the Year race, as she now sits in third place, trailing only Matthew Ashton and Daniel Negreanu.

It should be noted that the 23 year-old Harwood didn’t come out of nowhere. For over a year she has been grinding away at WSOP Circuit Events in the south, and in that time has won two WSOPC rings. In February of 2012 Harwood won a $345 NLHE event at the WSOPC Palm Beach Kennel Club series, pocketing over $30k in the process, and in May of 2012 she replicated her earlier win with a victory in the $355 NLHE event at the WSOPC New Orleans series, this time earning $23k. Harwood is now approaching the $1 million mark in career tournament earnings after winning some $850,000 at the 2013 WSOP.

Here is a look at the final table payouts from Event #60, a $1,500 NLHE event:

1. Loni Harwood — $609,017

2. Yongshuo Zheng — $378,607

3. Mika Paasonen — $267,978

4. Yngve Steen — $193,265

5. Asi Moshe — $141,124

6. Daniel Cascado — $104,282

7. Cy Williams — $78,006

8. Bijon Notash — $59,036

9. Hiren “Sunny” Patel — $45,212
