Macau looks to host $100 million poker tournament

According to unverified reports swirling around the Internet, a group of Chinese businessmen is looking to put together a small poker tournament in the gambling capital of the East, Macau. The tournament would have up to 500 entrants according an American businessman who spoke with GamingToday Magazine, William Murray, who has been involved on an organizational level, with a prize-pool between $65 million and $100 million.

The tournament, which will be known as the Macau Pro/Am Open (kind of an innocuous name for such a large event, but I guess Epic and World Series are already taken) is slated to be held in the spring of 2013, with registration taking place over the next two weeks (another very strange detail).

For the tournament to reach its $100,000,000 prize-pool the 500 players would each be on the hook for $200,000 and with such a short registration period to work with it seems unlikely that the group of people organizing this tournament could get so many entries (for such a huge chunk of money) in the next two weeks.

Previous, comparable, Super-High-Roller events with $100,000-$250,000 buy-ins have garnered anywhere from a single table of participants up to the high-water mark of the 39 players who participated in the WPT Super-High-Roller last year.

Again, the entire buzz is coming from a single source who spoke to a small online gaming site, so take it for what it’s worth. It could be anything from a hastily contrived idea, to a PR move, or even utter BS meant to gain attention for some entity in the gaming industry.
