david rennick sentenced to jail

Canadian David Rennick has this week appeared in court on charges that saw the poker player act as a middleman for online poker rooms that were looking to continue to pay US based poker players.

The 35 year old appeared before a federal court in Manhattan, facing charges of being involved with making ‘Illicit’ payments to online gamblers for a number of online poker rooms and gambling houses.

Rennick pleaded guilty to the charges based on the fact that he operated a business that passed online gambling winnings between player and provider back in 2007.  Rennick said while in court “I had a business that transferred money from offshore gaming sites to American players.”

The courts took action against the defendant and the first port of call in terms of punishment was to relieve Rennick of $17 million that he had made during the time of operation.

Because Rennick admitted the charges and was able to create a plea deal with the prosecution, the man now faces a significantly lighter sentencing from the courts, altering the possible jail time that could be given from what was thought to be 55 years down to between 6 – 12 months.

Although the courts have ordered Rennick to hand over $17 million of earnings during his time in operation, the prosecution claim that the man processed around $350 million worth of transactions and so are pressing the courts to award them with $515 million on top of the man surrendering his earnings during that time.
