Nguyen and McEvoy join the Poker Hall of Fame
Amid all of the World Series of Poker Main Event final table talk and the inundation of stories coming out of New Jersey as the Garden State prepares to launch real-money online gambling on November 26th there were plenty of other stories this week, including the induction of Tom McEvoy and Scotty Nguyen into the Poker Hall of Fame.
Normally this story gets a lot of traction in the poker world, but this year was different, and I don’t feel like Nguyen or McEvoy got the attention they deserve –or perhaps better stated, the attention the moment deserves.
The induction ceremony took place Monday Night at the Rio, just before the Main Event final got underway, and along with a select group of poker dignitaries the two places of honor were occupied by Nguyen and McEvoy.
Tom McEvoy
There’s not much more to say about Tom McEvoy than I said in this column earlier this week, so I’ll just add that while many people could best his playing resume, and plenty of people have made bigger contributions to poker than Tom, there are very few people that could compete with McEvoy’s combined resume as a player and a contributor.
Scotty Nguyen
Scotty Nguyen may have fallen out of favor in poker circles after setting televised poker five years with his drunken performance at the 2008 Poker players Championship. But I for one am glad to see that the Hall of Famer voters didn’t take their punishment too far and after five years put a very deserving man in the Poker Hall of Fame.
Considering that Scotty was one of the faces of poker during the early days of the Poker Boom, and has one of the most impressive tournament resumes going, I’ve said all along that he was a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame, the only question was when.
Turns out the answer was 2013.
