Phil Hellmuth on top of WSOP POY leader-board

With over 40 of the 58 total tournaments now completes at the 2011 World Series of Poker the Player of the Year race is starting to take shape, and unlike in previous years where the winner was almost assuredly going to be a two-time bracelet winner at the series, with the new BLUFF Magazine formula being used the #1 spot is now held by a player who has yet to win at the 2011 WSOP, Phil Hellmuth.

Hellmuth finds himself on top of the leader-board thanks to his two runner-up finishes thus far, but the top of the leader-boards is extremely crowded, and will likely become even more crowded as the final 18 or so tournaments at the WSOP are completed.

Here is a look at the current leaders in the 2011 WSOP POY race:

1. Phil Hellmuth — 420.75 points

2. Samuel Stein — 402.63 points

3. Mikhail Lakhitov — 401.80 points

4. Mitch Schock — 364.81 points

5. John Juanda — 336.00 points

6. Amir Lehavot — 330.75 points

7. Sean Getzwiller — 325.00 points

8. Jason Mercier — 323.45 points

9. Mark Schmid — 317.75 points

10. Steve Landfish — 317.70 points

With the new formula that factors in buy-in size and field size, has added the WSOP Europe tournaments into the mix, as well as increasing the value of the Main Event, the POY will no longer be awarded to the player with the most bracelets at the end of the WSOP –who may have had a very hot week at the tables and then bombed out of every other event– and will go to the most consistent performer over the course of the WSOP.
