A 27-year-old amateur poker player decided to play a live poker tournament for the first time in 2003 and ended up winning the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event for $2.5 million. That poker player was Chris Moneymaker who booked a seat at the Main Event from a $39 online satellite event.

Moneymaker Effect Responsible For Poker Boom

The internet-fueled poker boom that took place after 2003 was said to be ignited by that Moneymaker’s win and is often referred to be poker analysts as the Moneymaker effect. After his 2003 victory, entries to the 2004 WSOP Main Event tripled to 2576 players from 839 in 2003. By 2006, there were 8773 competitors at the Main Event, more than tenfold the number of the entrants in 2003.

More than a decade after his monumental win, Moneymaker continues to be a great ambassador of the game, as he continues to refine and develop his strategy. After years of working hard on his game, Moneymaker started teaching poker in 2013.

In an entry in his PokerStars blog, Moneymaker shares that since his 2003 WSOP Main Event win, he has had a many opportunities presented to him to teach poker. He declined these offers as he wasn’t certain that he had the right qualifications at that point of time to become a poker coach. Things have changed during the last few years as Moneymaker has been working as a WPT Boot Camp instructor for the past few years and that has enabled him to develop key strategies when it comes to teaching poker to beginners.

Moneymaker Happy To Teach Beginners The Basics

According to Moneymaker, face-to-face instruction is always more effective than relying on strategy books. But supplemental reading is also a great way to develop play style and strategy and. He recommends The Raiser’s Edge: Tournament-Poker Strategies for Today’s Aggressive Game by Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Tyson Streib, Tony Dunst, and Lee Nelson.

Moneymaker added that there are a lot of teachers out there who aren’t don’t have top credentials as poker players or have stopped keeping up with the changes in the game. This is why when he teaches his students, he makes sure that he not only shows them what to do—but explains exactly what kind of processes and factors go into each decision. Poker players who are new to the game will be thrilled to learn that they can get lessons from Moneymaker.

While poker is an easy game to learn, Moneymaker notes that it is a hard game to master. This is why he continues to learn as he teaches. In a statement, he said, “It’s humbling to teach, especially when I’m thinking of mistakes I made in the past and find myself explicitly telling students to avoid making those same errors. But that’s the value of experience, and if I can help someone in that way it’s good for my student and it’s good for me, too.”
