The 10 most intriguing people in poker

Posted by Steve Ruddock on Jan 03, 2012 Posted in Poker News | No Comments »

There are plenty of poker players whose lives are an open book, thanks to their stardom as well as their propensity to make use of social media. These players, like Daniel Negreanu, Tony G, and Phil Hellmuth catalogue most of their daily activities, and although they are very interesting their lives do not hold the secrets that people love to uncover.

But there is also another group of top poker players whose lives are far more closed, or more interesting, and therefore far more intriguing! Some of the players on the following list are very well known (and people may think they have a good read on their lives) but for whatever reason these individuals are constantly discussed on the poker forums for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with their poker skill –although that also comes up from time to time as well.

So in no particular order here is a look at my list of the Top 10 most intriguing people in poker:

Viktor “Isuldur1” Blom

It took well over a year to even confirm his identity, and Blom still disappears for months at a time!

Tom “durrrr” Dwan

Although Dwan is one of the most recognizable poker pros very little is known about his day-to-day whereabouts or even what hemisphere he happens to be in. Needless to say, the poker world is interested in anything durrrr!

Joe Sebok

Sebok puts himself out there (or at least he did prior to Black Friday) and the man who was the poker community’s whipping boy for anything UB Poker is still one of the more talked about players in the poker world –having 1 million Twitter followers tends to help too!

Annie Duke

It seems with every footstep she takes Annie Duke stirs up a little controversy. By far poker’s most polarizing figure, Duke is often at the forefront of the most heated poker forum threads!

Annette “Annette_15” Obrestad

A female, teenage, poker prodigy is going to cause plenty of intrigue, but after claiming to have won a 180-man S&G without looking at a hand, and winning the WSOP Europe at the aged of 19, Annette Obrestad has become even more intriguing with her wild comments about old-time pros and female poker players!

Phil Laak

When people place bets on your actual age, you could probably give the guy from the Dos Equis commercials a run for his money. Throw in a Hollywood girlfriend and the crazy table talk Phil Laak is known for and you have the “REAL” Most Interesting Man in the World.

Gus Hansen

Gus Hansen has always been an enigma in the poker world despite his success. For the quintessential Gus Hansen story, Google “Phil Laak + The Scoop” and let the hilarity ensue!

Phil Ivey

Although he is perhaps the best-known poker player in the world, Phil Ivey has been very careful to let as little of his personal life seep into the public as possible. Prior to his divorce very few people knew anything at all about Phil’s private life.

Daniel “jungleman12” Cates

Since his “odd” forum posts, and strange behavior in an interview where he couldn’t understand why a restaurant would be busier on Valentine’s Day than any other day, Daniel Cates has been the guinea pig for amateur psychologists on the poker forums who try to diagnose his strange behavior.

Liv Boeree

Boeree is the prototypical Renaissance woman: Astrophysicist, rocker-chick, model, and poker pro. Interesting is probably an understatement when it comes to describing Boeree’s life.
