Poker pro Tommy Vedes wins second WPT title

Tommy Vedes put in the performance of a lifetime to pick up his second World Poker Tour title on Monday. The longtime poker pro not only had to battle a tough field, including three-handed play against former November Niner John Dolan and WPT Player of the Year contender Joe Serock, but he had to do so with a short-stack for much of the day.

Vedes was at the final table of the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown for the second straight year, looking to avenge his disappointing 6th place finish last time around. It didn’t look good for Tommy early on, as he fell to 6th place on the chip-counts, but he persevered, and after biding his time was able to make a move during three and four-handed play.

Joe Serock, coming off a recent 3rd place finish at the WPT Bay 101 Shooting Stars Main Event was dominating action at the final table for most of the day, but when the tournament wound its way down to three-handed play Serock’s run-good started to run out. Vedes and 2010 November Niner John Dolan began chipping away at Serock’s lead, and after winning a massive all-in coin-flip against Serock, John Dolan took over the chip-lead.

Serock would be eliminated soon after when his Pocket Queens fell to the K/8 of Dolan after the board ran out 8-3-3-K-x.The third place finish must have been a disappointment for Serock, but he can take some solace in the fact that he is now the leader in the WPT Player of the Year race with just two events remaining.

Dolan took a commanding chip-lead into heads-up play against Vedes, but successive double-ups changed all of that, and Vedes managed to win his second WPT title through a combination of good play, good luck, and impeccable timing: Congratulations to Tommy Vedes, who joins a very short-list of two-time WPT Champions.

Tommy Vedes is now approaching $3.5 million in career tournament earnings, and has to be considered one of the most overlooked tournament players in the game.

Here is a look at the complete final table payouts from the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown:

* 1st place: Tommy Vedes – $779,520

* 2nd place: John Dolan – $459,360

* 3rd place: Joe Serock – $306,240

* 4th place: Craig Bergeron – $212,976

* 5th place: Sharon Levin – $158,688

* 6th place: Kyle Bowker – $122,496

Next up on the WPT will be another stop in Florida, this time in Jacksonville for the BestBet Open, before moving on to the WPT Championship at the Bellagio in May. The $5,000 Main Event at the BestBet Open will get underway on Friday, so players will only have a few days of relaxation, and fun in the sun, before they move on to the next tournament.
