The first major live poker tournament of 2016 has been won by Mike Watson, who claimed a total of $728,325 in the Main Event of the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas. He triumphed over a competitive field of 928 entrants to walk away with the top prize in the European Poker Tour (EPT) event last Thursday, 14th January.

The 2016 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) took place this month at the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas. It’s always a popular event with poker players and attracts some big names each year to contest huge prize pools.

The 31 year old professional poker player from Canada, known as “SirWatts” in the online poker world, achieved his first EPT Main Event win which has brought his career earnings though live poker tournaments to over $9 million so far. He had to overcome a highly competitive field of poker players to scoop the trophy, including a stacked final table. He entered the final table as the largest stack holder among the six finalists.  The renowned Russian player Vladimir Troyanovskiy came in fifth place winning $207,940 followed by Toby Lewis then Phillip McAllister.

The final event came down to a thrilling heads-up encounter between Watson and rival Tony Gregg, previously a three-time finalist in the competition. The two poker players were evenly matched in skill during the final game, however Gregg had a 2-1 lead over Watson going into the one-on-one poker duel. The match lasted for several hours, with Watson too strong for Greggs to overcome. The pair eventually agreed to a deal, arranging that Watson would take home $695,325 and Gregg would claim $612,175, leaving an additional $33,000 to play for in the end. Watson called Gregg’s bluff in the end, and with a flush he ended the game on a high.

“It has special meaning to me that Steve Paul-Ambrose won it ten years ago. He was a mentor to me and that makes it extra sweet”, Watson told PokerStars reporters after the event, signifying that the win was particularly resonant with him. His impressive victory is the first at a premier event on the annual poker calendar.

The 2016 PCA follows on from a highly successful 2015 event, which saw over 800 players contesting a prize pool of nearly $8 million. In the end, the event was won by American player Kevin Schulz who collected a massive $1.5 million in prize money.
