Anytime a popular tourist destination plays host to a major poker tournament you can expect a fairly strong turnout, and this is precisely what occurred at the World Poker Tour’s inaugural stop in Venice, Italy. After two Day 1 flights the WPT Venice Main Event attracted a respectable field of 523 entrants, sending the prize-pool over the €1.5 million mark.

The €3,000 buy-in tournament saw some of Europe’s biggest names take to the poker tables at the Casino di Venezia, including virtually every top Italian poker player whether they live in Italy or not: Max Pescatori, Dario Minieri, Fabrice Soullier, Claire Renaut, Dominik Nitsche, Dragan Galic, and Claudio Rinaldi were among the participants: Not to mention Italian soccer legend Francesco Totti taking on three Party Poker pros in a series of heads-up matches the name of charity.

On Monday the Casino di Venezia will play host to a €10,000 buy-in High-Roller tournament, which is scheduled to last three days.

The WPT has had a bit of trouble making headway into the European market over the years, focusing mainly on its United States tournaments –not to mention being pitted against the more established PokerStars EPT which continues to grow after 7 Seasons—and is hoping that some slightly smaller buy-in tournaments they have scheduled for this season, such as the Venice Championship, can help usher them through the door and gain them a foothold in the expanding European Market.

If you are looking to quilify to play in the next EPT, remember going through PokerStars Sattillites are the easiest way. Just remember to use one of PokerStars poker bonus codes when signing up.
