WSOP Notebook: $500k tourney, Pepper Spray, and more

There were some crazy and interesting stories coming out of the Rio on Friday, including a release of pepper spray, a celebrity cash, and the rumors of a One Drop-esque tournament on the horizon.

Richard Yong hints at massive tournament at WSOP APAC

In an interview with PokerNews.com, One Drop participant and Macau high-stakes regular Richard Yong let word slip of a proposed $500,000 buy-in tournament with a re-entry that might take place at the inaugural WSOP APAC tournament series that is scheduled to be held in Australia this coming April.

According to Yong, who cashed in the Big One for One Drop tournament: “I like the high stakes. The WSOP APAC (Asia Pacific) of next year in Melbourne will have a $500k buy in tournament with one re-entry. It will better for players because no tax like in U.S.”,

We’ll be sure to keep you posted if more details or a confirmation on this event come to light.

Roberto Luongo cashes, finishes 634th

The 2012 WSOP run of hockey all-star Roberto Luongo came to an end on Day 4 of the Main Event, but not before Luongo squeaked into the money, finishing in 634th place. Luongo was one of several athletes that have played in the Main Event, and to my knowledge is the first active player to cash in the tournament.

All former WSOP Champions eliminated

Every year during the World Series of Poker Main Event a lot is made of the former champions making deep runs and the chance for a repeat winner, but this time around the suspense was killed early as every former WSOP Main Event champion was eliminated by the close of Day 4.

Johnny Chan was the last WSOP Champion still alive when he was eliminated in 353rd place late on Day 4.

Pepper spray Pen???

One of the craziest stories to ever come out of the WSOP happened yesterday. According to PokerNews.com, a player in the tournament found what he thought was a pen in the parking lot of the Rio, but after fiddling with it at the poker tables he soon realized his error as pepper spray was dispersed into the air!

Over four tables were affected by the chemical, sending players into coughing fits. One of the players affected was poker pro and former WSOP Main Event final table participant Lee Childs, who told PokerNews: “A guy at my table raked in a pot and then all of a sudden jumped up from the table and started coughing like crazy. Then I felt a tickle in my throat and started coughing. Turns out a guy had what he thought was a pen and it sprayed pepper spray in the air,”

Moral of the story: don’t pick-up pens in the parking lot of casinos!
