PokerStars breaks online tournament record

Well before their attempt to break their own record for the largest online poker tournament in history PokerStars managed to hit the cap they placed on the $1 buy-in/$250k guaranteed tournament. In the end, the tournament saw an impressive field of 200,000 players compete in the historic event, an amazing number considering PokerStars has left the US market entirely (which accounted for roughly 25% of their Black Friday player traffic.

Considering many players were shut-out from the event (the cap of 200,000 was reached over 3 hours before the tournament began); had US players been able to participate, and had PokerStars had the capability of lifting the 200,000 player cap, the tournament could have easily reached 300,000 players in my estimation.

An official from the Guinness Book of World Records was on hand to witness the historic tournament and make sure all of the guidelines were followed for the event to make the pages of the Record Book. The old record of 149,196 was set on December 27, 2009, a number that was eclipsed in the pre-registration period days before the actual tournament took place.

It took only 2.5 hours for the money bubble to burst, and as the 12,150 remaining players started collecting their payouts (which began at $4) the focus of the players likely began to shift to the $50,000 first-place prize.

It may have only taken 2.5 hours for the tournament to go from 200,000 players down to 12,150, but it took almost another five hours for a winner to be crowned –but not before a deal was made during three-handed play!

The winner of the tournament was a Russian player using the online handle of “sokoluk1991″, who managed to pocket $40,258.83 for his $1 investment. The runner-up in the tournament was “Kaitz20” listed to be from Estonia who profited to the tune of $34,000 thanks to the htree-handed deal. The third player involved in the deal was a UK player using the screen-name “King-2-Z” who walked away with $25,741.17 for his seven hours of play.

Here is a look at the final table payouts from the tournament:
