Poker Nordica closes doors; players WILL be paid

This week we were made aware of yet another online poker room that has been shuttered in the aftermath of Black Friday, Poker Nordica. After six years of operation Poker Nordica has decided to close its doors, having been operating on the Merge Gaming Network since coming online in 2006. Poker Nordica was at one point the second largest online poker room on the network, trailing only Carbon Poker, but the popularity of the site has been waning over the past few years.

The site announced it would closing its doors on March 31, giving players just a single day’s notice –as the site shut its doors on April 1st. However, players had been growing concerned over slow payouts and a lack of response from the site’s customer support team. With the writing on the wall, and messages to Poker Nordica going unanswered, Poker Nordica finally e-mailed their players explaining that the site would be closing down.

While there is no message on the site’s homepage, any player attempting to sign-up at the site or existing players logging into the Poker Nordica software are met with the same message sent to their players via E-Mail:

“We unfortunately need to close down Poker Nordica from April 1th 2012!

“If you have any funds in your Poker Nordica account, you can visit the URL on the client login screen. This will take you to a page where you can login to the Poker Nordica cashier and request a withdrawal.

“Alternatively, if you have another active account within the Merge Network and would like your balance transferred over, please email support@pokernordica.com and give them your alternate account details and they will arrange the transfer.

“We wish all our players the best in the future”

Players now have until May 1st, 2012 to cash-out their funds from the site, but many players could run into a snag, especially if they only have a modest amount of money on the site. In order to request a check from Poker Nordica players must have $115 on the site (a $100 minimum withdrawal coupled with a $15 fee for processing the check) otherwise they will have to transfer their funds that are on Poker Nordica to another poker room on the Merge Gaming Network.

There will be no fee to transfer your Poker Nordica account balance to another poker room on the Merge Gaming Network, but players will have to setup an account on the site they want their Poker Nordica balance transferred to. Players interested in transferring their balances can e-mail support@pokernordica.com. Two alternatives would be Lock Poker or Carbon Poker.

In the aftermath of Black Friday many of us in the poker industry are a bit surprised that this type of abrupt closing of an online poker site hasn’t been more widespread, especially for sites that had previously been active in the US market and have now seen their player pool from the US drastically diminished.

Furthermore, even sites that are still active in the US are realizing that these players from the US are far more wary about leaving large sums of money on an online poker room after what happened to the account balances at Full Tilt Poker, UB Poker, and Absolute Poker.
