Viktor Isildur1 Blom and PokerStars part ways

One of the biggest names in the history of online poker has decided not to part ways with his sponsor. On Tuesday PokerStars announced that Viktor “Isildur1” Blom will no longer be a part of Team PokerStars Pro, stating that the decision was “mutual’. The news first broke on PokerNews.com, and the site managed to get a statement from both Eric Hollreisser (the head of PokerStars Corporate Communications) and Viktor Blom about the split:

“In his short time as a poker player, Viktor has played against the biggest names in poker at the highest stakes in the toughest games,” said Hollreiser. “It’s hard to recall a player who has kept the poker world so riveted at such an early stage of his career. We’ll be watching with great interest and we wish him nothing but success.”

“I’ve enjoyed my time as a Team Pro and I wish everyone at PokerStars the best. Now I just want to concentrate on playing poker,” Blom was quoted as saying.

Blom is of course best known for his incredible stint on Full Tilt poker in late 2009 where he won millions of dollars in a few weeks only to get decimated and give it all back just as quickly. The run on Full Tilt saw the at the time anonymous poker player take part in the 10 largest pots in online poker history, as well as one of the scandalous sessions when he lost $4.2 million in a single day to Brian Hastings.

The split is an odd one, considering Isildur1 made his first big live score in January when he won the Super-High-Roller tournament at the PokerStars PCA; Blom then went on to have one of the most remarkable runs in PokerStars WCOOP history, winning back-to-back tournaments; as well as continuing his Superstar Showdown matches at PokerStars.

At just 21 years of age, Blom is already one of the most accomplished, followed, polarizing, and enigmatic, figures the game has ever seen, which has people looking for the logical reasons for the split.

I have come up with two possible explanations for the split:

#1 – Blom has disappeared from poker for months on end over the years, and may no longer want to be handcuffed to playing x-amount of hands or appearing at particular events for his sponsored site.

#2 – Blom will join Full Tilt Poker when the site is relaunched. Full Tilt poker made Isildur1 famous in the poker world, so what better way for PokerStars to relaunch the site than by signing Viktor “Isildur1” Blom? The presence of Isildur1 at the Full Tilt poker nosebleed tables could reignite the community’s interest in these games.
