Hellmuth and ElkY to captain 2011 Caesar’s Cup Teams

In 2009 the Annette Obrestad led squad from Europe was able to defeat Daniel Negreanu’s America’s team in the inaugural Caesar’s Cup held at the 2009World Series of Poker Europe. In 2011 the second Caesar’s Cup competition will be held at the new home of the World Series of Poker Europe, Cannes, France, and this time around the captains will be Phil Hellmuth for the Americas and Bertrand “ElkY” Grosspellier for Europe.

Similar to Golf’s Rider Cup, the Caesar’s Cup allows the captains to form their squads from eligible players from their respective regions. In 2009 Negreanu selected a squad of tried and true poker veterans while Obrestad chose a number of up and coming talent from Europe –in the end it seemed Obrestad’s method had the better EV as the Europeans easily defeated the Americans.

This time around it seems that Hellmuth will choose a mixture of veterans and young guns, as he recently Tweeted the following message:

“I’m considering picking: Phil Ivey, @Erik_Seidel Johnny Chan, @HuckleberrySeed @RealKidPoker @Tom_Dwan @JasonMercier @BenbaLamb”

So far ElkY hasn’t revealed any of his possible selections, but the eccentric Frenchman has a number of talented players to choose from including Obrestad, Martin Jacobson, SamTrickett, Jake Cody, or even a veteran like Gus Hansen.

The Caesar’s Cup is scheduled to take place on October 19th, 2011during the 2011 World Series of Poker; it will be very interesting to see how many of Phil Hellmuth’s choices accept the invitation, especially Phil Ivey who has been MIA in the poker world since Black Friday.
