Doc Sands wins WPT Super-High-Roller

wpt logoAfter two full days of action the World Poker Tour Super-High-Roller tournament taking place at the Bellagio in Las Vegas had reached the official final table of six players, but three of those players would find their three-day effort fruitless, as only the top three finishers would be making any money in the tournament.

The event attracted only 21 entries, a significant decrease from last year’s event which drew 34 players. But even with a 40% decrease in attendance the first place prize for the 2013 $100k Super-High-Roller topped $1 million.

Among the players sitting at the final table were young guns, Joe “subiime” Cheong, Andrew “Good2Cu” Robl, Steven “ZugWatt” Silverman, and David “Doc” Sands, with a couple of businessmen rounding out the final table in 68 year-old Jim Courtney and 38 year-old Daniel Perper. Perperand Robl both cashed in this same event last year, with Perper finishing in fourth place and Robl the runner-up to Tom Marchese, but their chances looked pretty slim for a repeat cash.

Here is a look at the final table seating assignments and chip counts from the www.worldpokertour.com website:

* Seat 1: Joseph Cheong: 1,646,000 (102 bb)

* Seat 2: Andrew Robl: 169,000 (10 bb)

* Seat 3: Jim Courtney: 1,690,000 (105 bb)

* Seat 4: Steven Silverman: 1,339,000 (83 bb)

* Seat 5: Daniel Perper: 164,000 (10 bb)

* Seat 6: David Sands: 1,286,000 (80 bb)

Two players entered the final table on life-support, Daniel Perper and Andrew Robl, with 10 Big Blind stacks. As would be expected Robl was the first player eliminated, but Perper managed a bit of run-good early on and found himself in the money by the time the tournament was three handed, which amounted to a $500,000 swing when he was eliminated in 3rd place, leaving Sands and Cheong to play for the title and the $1,000,000 first-place prize-money.

Sands held a commanding three-to-one chip-lead at the start of heads-up play and would finish off the match very quickly, calling the all-in of Cheong with a dominating A8 to Cheong’s A3. And just like that it was all over, with David “Doc” Sands picking up the second seven-figure score of his career, and sending his career live tournament earnings over the $5.5 million mark.

Here is a look at the final table payouts from the $100k Super-High-Roller event:

1. David Sands – $1,023,750

2. Joseph Cheong – $614,250

3. Daniel Perper – $409,500

4. James Courtney – $0

5. Steven Silverman – $0

6. Andrew Robl – $0
