wpt logoWhen you ask poker fans to name some of the top young talent in the game you’ll find a ton of German players get mentioned, and leading the charge of burgeoning German poker stars is Party Poker sponsored pro and two-time WPT Champion Marvin “Mad Marvin” Rettenmaier. Today, at the World Poker Tour (WPT) Baden final table, Rettenmaier will be going for history as he looks to join Carlos Mortensen and Gus Hansen as the only three-time WPT Champions.

Rettenmaier will begin the day second on the leader-board, slightly behind the current chip-leader Vladimir Bozinovic. Rettenmaier is by far the best-known and most accomplished player at the final table, and is the odds-on-favorite to take home his third WPT trophy in less than a year.

Since being signed by Party Poker last spring Rettenmaier has gone from a “player to watch” to one of the best tournament talents in the game. In addition to his two back-to-back WPT wins (one at the $25k Championship and the other in Cyprus) Rettenmaier has final tabled a WSOP Europe tournament and won the EPT Prague High-Roller tournament. Since 2010 Rettenmaier has won nearly $4 million in live tournaments.

Here is a look at the chip counts for the final six players heading into Sunday’s final table in Baden, Austria:

1. Vladimir Bozinovic — 1,985,000

2. Marvin Rettenmaier — 1,565,000

3. Paul Berende — 1,305,000

4. Oswin Ziegelbecker — 1,150,000

5. Kimmo Kurko — 1,090,000

6. Grzegorz Wyraz — 550,000

The tournament began on February 19 and featured two starting days, Tuesday and Wednesday. A total of 254 players registered for the €3,300 buy-in Main Event tournament, creating a prize-pool of just over €1 million. Here is a look at the final table payouts for the tournament:

* 1st place: $271,258

* 2nd place: $172,695

* 3rd place: $111,587

* 4th place: $81,034

* 5th place: $59,496

* 6th place: $47,820

Sunday’s final table action will see the players in Level 26 of the event, with blinds at 20,000/40,000 with a 5,000 chip ante. Once the WPT Baden tournament wraps-up the players and the tour will move on to one of the biggest tournaments of the year, the WPT LA Poker Classic at the Commerce Casino. The LA Poker Classic routinely draws huge fields with most of the biggest names in poker in attendance for the tournament. Last year Sean Jazayeri defeated a field of 549 players to win the $1.3 million first-place prize.
