WPT Slovenia draws just 46 players on Day 1a

I realize the 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event is currently in progress, and that Slovenia is neither considered a vacation paradise nor a poker hotspot, but with a reasonably priced €3,300 buy-in, tournament officials were likely expecting a far greater turnout than the 46 players that showed up for Day 1a of the WPT Slovenia Main Event.

Even with 95 players registering on Day 1b, the tournament is by far one of the smallest Main Events in World Poker Tour history. Despite this, the tournament did draw some of European poker’s biggest names and brightest stars, including current Day 1b chip-leader Dominik Nitsche, as well as Toby Lewis, Tony G, Andrea Bucci, Sigi Stockinger, Sam el Sayed, Kasey Castle, Dragan Galic, and Filippo Candio.

24 of the 46 entrants on Day 1a made it through to Tuesday’s Day 2 of the tournament, while 58 of the 95 competitors who registered on Day 1b were able to bag up their chips at the end of play today.

The low turnout does not bode well for the chances of a Slovenian return for the WPT next year, or at the least the WPT may want to consider changing the date around so the tournament doesn’t conflict with the WSOP, and similar to the EPT, schedule some of the out of the way tournament so that they fall in line with other major tournaments in the surrounding countries –such as going from Copenhagen to Vienna to Berlin, as the EPT did during Season 7.
