10 Questions heading into the 2012 WSOP Part 1

As the 2012 World Series of poker approaches I thought it would be a good time to take a look at some of the questions poker players and the poker media will have going into the nearly two-month long summer poker series in Las Vegas. In the first installment of this two-part series I’ll take a look at five questions dealing with rules and the general state of poker. In Part 2 I’ll delve into questions regarding specific players in poker.

1. What will the ruling be on patches?

How the WSOP handles online poker patches will once again be a major story at the 2012 WSOP. Last year we saw the banning of patches from US poker sites, or from poker sites under indictment, but I’m wondering whether there will be a relaxation of this now that the Black Friday fallout is “starting” to look like it’s coming to fruition.

It would be a crushing blow for sites like Lock Poker, that have spent quite a bit of resources on signing players, to not be able to display their big-name pros like Annette Obrestad and Chris Moorman.

2. Has the interpretation of the “No talking about your hand” rule changed?

This was one of the big controversies during last year’s Main Event, and with all of the high-profile griping on the matter I’m certain that Jack Effel and the tournament officials want to make this rule as crystal-clear as possible before the WSP gets underway. The poker world needs consistency on how the rules are applied, and last year’s interpretations of this rule specifically caused a lot of problems.

3. Will the alleged deal between PokerStars and Full Tilt see players paid before the WSOP?

The answer to this question will have a huge factor on attendance at the WSOP, considering some $300 million could be re-injected into the poker economy. Even if the deal is simply announced before the WSOP, this may free-up a lot of staking money as players would then know for certain they will soon be receiving their Full Tilt funds.

4. Is this the year for the ladies?

Will the ladies finally capture their first WSOP open-bracelet since 2008 this year? I think the answer is a resounding yes considering each year the field of women players seems to be growing more-and-more talented, even if the number of female players has been fairly static.

5. Will the WSOP allow men in the ladies event?

According to a report from last year the Nevada Legislature passed a law that allows casinos to bar men from playing in women-only poker tournaments, so we’ll have to see if the WSOP decides to enforce this law. Based on the amount of ire and ridicule WSOP officials have heaped upon men in the past few years my guess is they will not allow men to enter.
