$10k Omaha 8 Championship underway at WSOP

The third Championship tournament of the 2011 World Series of Poker began yesterday with 202 players registering for the $10k Omaha 8 Championship, a number just slightly off of last year’s tally of 212 entrants.

As is usually the case with non-NLHE Championship events the field was made up of almost entirely pros, and considering this is a slow-structured Limit event, only a couple dozen players failed to make it back for Day 2 of the tournament –among the busted players were Carlos Mortensen, Mike “The Grinder” Mizrachi (who is off to a very slow start at the 2011 WSOP), John Racener, Justin “BoostedJ” Smith, and Ted Forrest.

Here is a look at the Top 10 chip counts heading into Day 2 of the Omaha 8 Championship:

1. Fabrizio Gonzalez – 117,300

2. Eric Buchman -108,800

3. Guillaume Rivet – 95,900

4. Christopher George – 93,200

5. Mikhail Smirnov – 86,500

6. Richard Ashby 85,000

7. Marco Johnson – 83,100

8. Freddy Deeb – 82,800

9. Alessio Isaia – 77,000

10. Damjan Radanov – 77,000

As the blinds are now a factor in the event, expect the field to shrink dramatically on Day 2 of the O8 Championship.

27 players will reach the money, with the winner of the event receiving the lion’s share of the nearly $2 million prize-pool, $465,216, with 19th – 27th place receiving a $16329 payday.
