Countdown to the 2012 WSOP: The Ladies

Posted by Steve Ruddock on May 21, 2012 Posted in Poker News | No Comments »

Despite a law passed in the Nevada legislature the World Series of Poker has decided to not ban men from entering the Ladies-Only tournament –WSOP lawyers advised against this after reviewing the law—so it’s possible that a female poker player may not win a single bracelet at the 2012 WSOP. But the point of this column is to give you an idea of just who the female poker players that may win an open-event bracelet at the 2012 WSOP will be; or at least which female players to keep an eye on.

Xuan Liu

Liu has been one of the top-performing female players over the past year, and will be looking for her first WSOP success this year.

Vanessa Selbst

Selbst is one of the top tournament players in poker (male or female) and she is also the last female to win an open-bracelet at the WSOP, which she did back in 2008.

Maria Ho

Maria Ho is a well-rounded player who probably has the best chance of any woman to win a bracelet given her affinity for the less popular poker games –where players don’t have to navigate thousand-player strong fields.

Ho just missed winning a bracelet last year, finishing runner-up to ALLEN BARI IN THE $5K NLHE tournament.

Vanessa Rousso

Rousso, a Team PokerStars Pro, will be playing a full schedule at the 2012 WSOP, and “Lady Maverick” is due for a big win considering her recent close calls, as well as some crushing defeats over the past year.

Melanie Weisner

Weisner has been racking up cashes on the tournament trail, but the online pro turned live tournament grinder is still looking for a breakout performance, and maybe the 2012 WSOP will be the venue for Weisner’s coming out party? The recently crowned, EPT Heads-Up Player of the Year will be a threat in the Heads-Up tournaments, as well as the standard NLHE events.

Annette Obrestad

Obrestad hasn’t lived up to the lofty expectations that have been heaped upon her shoulders since winning the WSOPE Main Event at the age of 18. Unfortunately Obrestad’s Las Vegas WSOP experiences have been mediocre at best. I expect big things from the recently signed Lock Poker pro at the 2012 WSOP.

Karina Jett

Karina Jett is a solid poker player who has a chance to compete in a variety of different poker formats.

La Sengphet

Sengphet has been putting up impressive numbers on the WSOP Circuit Series, so it will be interesting to see if she decides to take her talents to Las Vegas this summer.

Kathy Liebert

Liebert is always a threat in any tournament she enters. Liebert is an excellent Limit Holdem player, giving her a much better chance at winning a bracelet.

JJ Liu

Liu is another longtime tournament player, and one of the most accomplished female players in WSOP history. After a flurry of final tables in 2011, perhaps JJ can pick-up a bracelet in 2012?
