It may not be an “official” open-event at the World Series of Poker, but with over 4,100 entrants the Seniors Tournament has everything needed to make Allyn Jaffrey-Shulman’s win on Monday good enough in my book to put an end to the bracelet drought that dates back to 2008 for women at the WSOP.

This honor will likely be debated as to whether it ends the streak by women at the WSOP, but considering the event was open to all comers over the age of 50 women only made up a small percentage of the field, and that’s what makes this Jaffrey-Shulman’s win as good as an “official open-event”.

So, the win by Jaffrey-Shulman was the first by a woman at the World Series of Poker in any event other than the Ladies Tournament since Vanessa Selbst won the $1,500 PLO event in 2008. Despite a number of close calls in the past two years, women have been absolutely stymied when it comes to winning bracelets, and seemed almost cursed, as Maria Ho was also a runner-up at the 2011 WSOP, and this year Amanda Musumeci finished 2nd in the $1,500 NLHE event, not to mention the nearly dozen women who have made final tables at the 2012 WSOP halfway through the tournament series.

Jaffrey-Shulman is part of a powerhouse poker family, having married former Cardplayer owner Barry Shulman (who won the WSOP Europe Main Event a few years ago) which makes her the step-mother of two-time WSOP Main Event final table participant Jeff Shulman. Now Allyn can compare poker resumes with both of the boys having won the over $600k first-place prize in the 4,128 player field. And to win the tournament she needed to fight her way through a very tough and battle-tested final table that included Hoyt Corkins (who finished in 4th place) and runner-up Dennis Phillips.

Corkins is having a very impressive 2012 WSOP, this being his third overall cash and second final table this year. Despite all of his success Corkins only has a single WSOP bracelet on his poker resume, which was won way back in 1992. Some 20 years, and over $5 million in career tournament earnings, Corkins is still trying to replicate his WSOP win from 1992 –although he did go on a poker hiatus from 1993 to 2003.
