Phil Ivey leads $5k Omaha 8 heading into Day 3

After skipping the entire 2011 World Series of Poker following the troubles at Full Tilt Poker post-Black Friday Phil Ivey doesn’t seem to have skipped a beat when it comes to his domination at the WSOP in recent years. After barely missing his 9th bracelet earlier this week (finishing second to Andy Frankenberger in the $10k Pot Limit Holdem event) Ivey is right back in the mix in Event #24, the $5k Omaha 8 or better tournament.

With the tournament heading into the final day (Day 3 of the tournament) there are just 27 players remaining and Phil Ivey is leading the way with a chip-stack of 446,500, well ahead of the trail-pack that includes Dan Kelly and Mike Matusow, both with around 290,000.

Ivey’s path to bracelet #9 will not be an easy one, considering that virtually every player still in the field is a name poker pro. Some of the players still in contention include the aforementioned Kelly and Matusow, along with Brian Hastings (who already has a bracelet in 2012), 1998 WSOP Champion Scotty Nguyen, Joe Cassidy, and Raymond Davis (Davis has already final tabled the $1,500 Omaha 8 tournament at the 2012 WSOP).

Ivey has been playing a very full schedule at the 2012 WSOP (bracelet bets perhaps?) and his current run is the fourth cash of the tournament series for Phil, and sets him up nicely for his 3rd final table of the 2012 WSOP:

* $10,000 Pot Limit Hold’em (Event #17): 2nd place for $275,559

* $1,500 No Limit Hold’em – Shootout (Event #14): 118th place for $5,295

* $5,000 Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo (Event #15): 7th place for $34,595

Here is a look at the Top 10 chip-counts heading into the final day of Event #24:

1. Phil Ivey – 446,500

2. Dan Kelly 297,000

3. Mike Matusow – 290,000

4. Meng La – 276,000

5. Brendan Taylor – 270,500

6. Brian Hastings – 251,000

7. Bart Hanson – 231,500

8. Scotty Nguyen – 212,500

9. Michael Wattel – 143,500

10. Viacheslav Zhukov – 141,500

The remaining players have all locked-up at least $10,348 for their efforts, but a $294,777 prize and the coveted WSOP gold bracelet is awaiting one player at the end of the tournament.

Here is a look at the payout schedule for the tournament:

* 1st: $294,777

* 2nd: $182,213

* 3rd: $136,046

* 4th: $102,260

* 5th: $77,342

* 9th: $26,940

* 10th-12th: $21,020

* 13th-15th: $16,544

* 16th-18th: $13,031
