WSOP Notebook: 3 questions that need to be answered

Posted by Steve Ruddock on Jun 11, 2012 Posted in Poker News | No Comments »

After an amazing Sunday at the World Series of Poker it’s hard to know precisely where to begin in this installment of the WSOP Notebook. Phil Hellmuth claimed his 12th WSOP bracelet, Phil Ivey fell just short of #8, and the $5k Limit Holdem tournament looks to be heading towards one of the toughest final tables in poker history. But this is the WSOP Notebook, and we’ve already covered the above stories, so let’s take a look at what else was going on at the WSOP Sunday.

In this installment I’m going to take a look at three burning questions:

Who still doesn’t have a bracelet?

This year Andy Bloch picked up his first WSOP bracelet, and last year a number of players managed to get off of the dubious list of “The best poker player without a WSOP bracelet”, including Phil Laak, Gus Hansen, Gavin Smith, and Bertrand “ElkY” Grosspellier. So at PokerNewsBoy we have decided to take a look at the 10 most surprising players who still lack a WSOP gold bracelet.

Here is our list, and stay tuned for a look at why we chose these 10 players (out of the many players without a WSOP bracelet) and complete detailed report of each players WSOP accomplishments in an upcoming series:

1. Bill Gazes

2. Juha Helppi

3. Tony G

4. Justin Bonomo

5. Shawn Buchanan

6. Patrik Antonius

7. Marcel Luske

8. Jonathan Little

9. Matt Glantz

10. Phil Gordon

Have you met the Shulmans?

Barry Shulman and his son Jeff are best known for their roles in bringing Cardplayer Magazine to the forefront of the poker industry, but the two have also become perhaps the most formidable father/son duo this side of Doyle and Todd Brunson.

The elder Shulman is a WSOP Europe Main Event winner, a 3rd place finish at the 2010 PCA Main Event, along with a bracelet at the 2001 WSOP in Stud 8.

The younger Shulman has found his way to two WSOP Main Event final tables, 11 WPT Championship event cashes, and 20 WSOP cashes.

Where are the young guns?

So far at the 2012 World Series of Poker the story has been all about the elder statesman of the game, either continuing their dominance or reemerging as forces to be reckoned with. While I’m waiting for the William Reynolds’, Doc Sands’, and Steve Gross’ of the poker world to take over and put their stamp on the WSOP, instead I’ve seen two men aged 66 and 71 pickup bracelets along with John Monnette, Phil Hellmuth, and Andy Bloch stealing most of the early headlines.

So Melanie Weisner, Steve Gross, Roberto Romanello, Taylor Paur, and Andrey Pateychuk, let’s get it going, my fantasy team is depending on you!
