WSOP Notebook: Norman Chad FT, $50k attendance and more

Another weekend at the World Series of Poker means plenty to talk about, as the usual Sunday $1k NLHE event got underway as well as the $50 Poker Players Championship. There were also several tournaments winding down, including the $3k NLHE which will pit Jackie Glazier against Greg Ostrander on Monday as Glazier tries to become the second female bracelet winner of 2012, and one of the ESPN hosts of the WSOP made the final table of the $2,500 O8/Stud-8 tournament.

Poker Players Championship attendance down

The WSOP has seen attendance go down in a number of events, but the $50k Poker Players Championship may be one of the most disappointing as it’s considered one of the Jewels of the poker world in terms of the tournament’s prestige. Once again the tournament is off the ESPN television schedule, and it seems to have hurt the turnout.

So far 104 players have registered for the event, with late registration open up until the start of Day 2 on Monday. Even with a few stragglers registering on Monday (my guess is there will be less than 5) the tournament will likely end as the second lowest in the seven-year history of the event –in 2009 ESPN dropped the tournament from the TV schedule after a terrible on-air performance by 2008 champ Scotty Nguyen who had one too many cocktails while playing, and also because the tournament was not a No Limit Holdem event. ESPN’s decision to drop the event from the TV schedule saw attendance plummet, from about 140 players to just 95.

Norman Chad finishes 6th in Event #42

As Oleksii Kovalchuk picked-up his second WSOP bracelet in as many years, most of the focus at the final table was on Norman Chad, the ESPN commentator whose voice and one-liners have become synonymous with the WSOP. Chad managed a very good showing in the event before bowing out in 6th place, but he did pocket a nice payday of over $36k for his efforts.

1. Oleksii Kovalchuk — $228,014

2. George Danzer — $140,825

3. Mark Gregorich — $90,829

4. Danny Ratigan — $65,812

5. Yuval Bronshtein — $48,387

6. Norman Chad — $36,093

7. Wing Wong — $27,313

8. Tim Burt — $20,966

Jackie Glazier going for gold

With Allyn Jaffrey Shulman’s 2012 WSOP bracelet in the Seniors Event having an asterisk in some people’s mind, Jack Glazier is trying to completely put to rest the streak of open-events without a bracelet by the ladies. Glazier will be taking a 3-to-1 chip advantage into heads-up play against Greg Ostrander on Monday, as she looks to win her first WSOP bracelet, and the first in a completely open even by a female since 2008.
