EPT Grand Final: Bonomo and Coren win, Day 1a underway
Justin Bonomo put his massive chip-lead to good work at yesterday’s Super-High-Roller final table, dominating the other players at the eight-person final table to take home the €1.6 million first-place prize-money. With only six players making the money there were two players at the final table who went home empty-handed: Eugene Katchalov, and the bubble-boy in the tournament Jonathan Duhamel.
While Duhamel and Katchalov find themselves -€100,000 despite making the final table, Daniel Negreanu pocketed €310,000 for his 6th place finish, making this one of the most expensive bubbles in the history of poker –although this will likely be smashed by the Big One for OneDrop $1,000,000 buy-in event scheduled for this year’s WSOP.
Here is a look at the final table payouts from the tournament:
1. Justin Bonomo – €1,640,000
2. Tobias Reinkemeier – €1,060,000
3. Bertrand Grospellier – €621,000
4. Patrik Antonius – €443,000
5. Masa Kagawa – €354,500
6. Daniel Negreanu – €310,000
Women dominate Heads-Up event
At the same time as the Super-High-Roller tournament was winding-down and Day 1a of the Grand Final Main Event was kicking-off, the €5,000 Heads-Up tournament was taking place, with a first of its kind (to my knowledge) all-female final, as Lock Poker Pro Melanie Weisner took on Team PokerStars Victoria Coren for the €59,000 first-place prize.
In the end, Coren would come out on top, besting Weisner for the title.
Day 1a in the books
As for the Grand Final Main Event, Day 1a saw 271 entrants, including a slew of the top players in poker –with even more expected on Day 1b. Among the chip-leaders is the dangerous David “Doc” Sands, John Eames, Tristan Clemencon, Freddy Deeb, and Jason Wheeler, all of whom managed to finish in the Top 10 at the end of the day.
Here is a look at the Top 10 chip-counts from Day 1a:
1. Martin Kabrhel — 167,800
2. David Sands — 160,300
3. John Eames — 157,200
4. Malte Moennig — 136,900
5. Tristan Clemencon — 121,100
6. Freddy Deeb — 114,600
7. Frank Koopmann — 113,900
8. Jason Wheeler — 112,900
9. Reza Mostafavi Tabatabaei — 110,900
10. Ben Warrington — 104,800
Other players who made it through to Day 2 were Steve O’Dwyer, Scott Seiver, Mickey Petersen, Andrew Badecker, JP Kelly, Phil Ivey, David Peters, Sam Trickett, Vanessa Selbst, Marvin Rettenmaier, Dan Shak, Kevin Vandersmissen, Martin Staszko, Isabelle Mercier, Chris Moorman, Jason Somerville, and Toby Lewis.
Day 1b will begin at Noon local time, and it looks like the 2012 EPT Grand Final will be able to surpass last year’s attendance number of 686 players. Last year’s Grand Final saw a dramatic attendance decrease from the year before when the EPT Grand Final attracted 848 players (in 2011 the EPT moved the Grand Final from Monte Carlo to Madrid) which was the last EPT Grand Final pre-Black Friday.
