Q&A with WPT Champion Jonathan Little

I recently had the opportunity to talk with two-time World Poker Tour Champion Jonathan Little, touching upon a number of topics ranging from Black Friday to his new poker book, Secrets of Professional Tournament Poker. Little is currently playing in the WPT Doyle Brunson Five Diamond Poker Classic Main Event where he has advanced to Day 3 of the tournament (Little finished 43rd, adding nearly $16,000 to his career tournament earnings of nearly $4.75 million according to thehendonmob.com).

PokerNewsBoy: Before anything else, what have you been up to since Black Friday, and how you have adjusted to the drastic changes it has caused in the poker world?

Jonathan Little: My schedule hasn’t really changed too much. Before black Friday, I would play live around 20 days per month and online around 10 days per month. Now I use those 10 online days to work on poker videos and other poker related projects, like writing my book.

PNB: Alright, with the obligatory Black Friday question out of the way, could you talk about the process of writing a book compared to writing an article or coaching students? Did you find the process harder than you anticipated?

JL: Writing the book was a fairly easy process for me because I already knew what I wanted to write. I went to NYC for 2 weeks and wrote the 550 pages that make up volume 1 and 2 of Secrets of Professional Tournament Poker in around 2 weeks. It was a nice fun grind.

PNB: Overall what were your impressions of the finished product, and what do you hope people will take away from Secrets of Professional Tournament Poker?

JL: I am very happy with the finished product. I basically explain how I do what I do. In order to become a great player, you must break away from the strict, defined plays that most decent players think are standard, and therefore mandatory. Poker is about playing the players, not the cards. This took me years to learn but will hopefully take my readers much less time.

PNB: Your biggest tournament win (money-wise) came at my old stomping grounds of Foxwoods, could you talk about your impressions of Foxwoods and what you feel may be contributing to the huge attendance drops at the WPT Foxwoods in recent years?

JL: A big problem with live mtts is the high rake. Also, the slow structures of the recent years have made it tough for amateurs to win because the pros have a long time to slowly grind them down. If the structures were faster, the rake was lower, and the buy-ins were smaller, poker would most likely stop declining.

PNB: Your online poker training site, FloatTheTurn.com recently slashed its membership prices to $8 as well as waiving the initiation fee. Could you talk about what led you to make this decision?

JL: I saw Netflix raise their prices and lose a ton of customers so I figured if I drastically lowered my price, I would get a decent amount of new members and also give back to the poker world. It worked.

PNB: Are you working on any other projects at the moment?

JL: I just finished editing volume 2 of my book, so that’s now finished. I am working on a new site, PokerCoaching.com although it is in the very early stages of development. I’ve also been making videos for FloatTheTurn, hosting live webinars each month, and doing a lot of private coaching.

PNB: As most of my readers know, the final question of every interview has to be a bit tongue-in-cheek, so here is what I came up with for you! Does it annoy you as much as it annoys me that your last name has the Green Grammar Line under it in Microsoft Word (I really hate that line)?

JL: I learned a long time ago to not sweat the small stuff.
