2011 WSOP Final Table countdown: Betting odds

With the 2011 November Nine set to reconvene in just two days this countdown article will focus on the one way all of us can have some the skin in the game: BETTING on the WSOP! While it isn’t Euro 2012 betting it’s still something right?

This isn’t our first look at the betting lines for the 2011 World Series of Poker Main event final table, but thanks to an added wrinkle by the good folks at Matchbook.com I get to take another look at the betting lines, and offer my less than expert opinion on which players have the most equity!

Matchbook.com will be updating its WSOP final table lines in real-time, allowing players to constantly update and hedge their bets. A spokesman for Matchbook, and well-known poker pro, Andrew Pantling had this to say on Matchbook’s in-play betting:

“With our stable of Matchbook poker pros chomping at the bit to get involved in this market in-running we’re guaranteed to have the best liquidity of any betting exchange for poker fans.

“We also asked James Bord to keep his mouth shut this time after his recent WSOPE pronouncements that UK players were better than US players which got Tony G involved in the betting and ended up costing us $144,000 in refunded bets. Thanks James!”

Bord famously guaranteed that an American would not win the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event, going so far as to offer refunds on losing bets up to $500 –which apparently cost the site quite a bit if Pantling’s tally above is accurate!

Here is a look at the opening odds at Matchbook.com for the 2011 WSOP Final Table:

* Seat 1: Matt Giannetti – 13/2 (24,750,000 in chips)

* Seat 2: Badih Bounahra – 12/1 (19,700,000)

* Seat 3: Eoghan O’Dea – 5/1 (33,925,000)

* Seat 4: Phil Collins – 7/1 (23,875,000)

* Seat 5: Anton Makiievskyi – 9/1 (13,825,000)

* Seat 6: Sam Holden – 16/1 (12,375,000)

* Seat 7: Pius Heinz – 11/1 (16,425,000)

* Seat 8: Ben Lamb – 11/2 (20,875,000)

* Seat 9: Martin Staszko 9/2 (40,175,000)

Historically the well known players tend to offer little value in terms of WSOP Main Event betting as their name recognition tends to inflate the amount of money wagered on them. Players like Phil Ivey, Allen Cunningham, Mike Mizrachi, Mike Matusow, Dan Harrington, and Chino Rheem (as well as other “known” pros like Lee Watkinson and Jeff Shulman) have all made the final table since 2004, and none have captured the WSOP crown.

Savvy sports-bettors should be able to find some really good value as the lines are adjusted in real-time. These adjustments should allow for numerous instances of “freerolls” by bettors as they hedge their bets along the way.
