$50k Players Championship underway at WSOP
The 2011 running of the $50k Players Championship saw a dramatic increase in attendance for the second straight year, but still well below the tournaments heydays of the mid 2000’s when attendance often flirted with 150 players. With a total of 128 entrants –12 more than in 2010—the prize-pool swelled to over $6.1 million, with over $1.7 million going to the winner and 16 places making the money overall.
The slow structure saw just five players hit the rail on Saturday: Arturo Diaz, Eli Elezra, Phil Laak, Andrew Pantling, and Jani Sointula.
This is one tournament that may have taken a hit thanks to Black Friday as a number of online players with large bankrolls were noticeably absent, but thanks to the tournaments placement at the end of the WSOP there were also a few earlier WSOP bracelet winners added to the roster –I highly doubt Leonard Martin or Owais Ahmed would be playing had they not won six-figures earlier in the WSOP.
Here is a look at the top 10 chip counts heading into Day 2 of the tournament:
1. Doug Booth – 324,600
2. Greg Mueller – 322,700
3. Yan Chen – 317,200
4. Alexey Makarov – 266,200
5. David Bach – 249,500
6. Vladimir Shchemelev – 248,000
7. Jason Lester – 245,200
8. Steve Sung – 243,800
9. Steve Billirakis – 239,500
10. David Benyamine – 238,400

While WSOP is creating a lot of interest among the poker community, news about Fulltiltpoker is also one of the most viewed on the website. And with more than 11000 players waiting for a refund from FTP, it seems FTP’s competitors are doing great bussiness these days. For example, 888poker and partypoker are getting most of the traffic with a lot of ex-FTP hands being seen dealing at 888poker tables. Being legal, 888poker offers the trust and security that FTP could not. The future of onlilne poker might see 888poker and partypoker dominate the bussiness.
