Erick Lindgren captures second WSOP bracelet
It’s been a tumultuous couple of years for one-time poker superstar Erick Lindgren. First Lindgren sat by while Full Tilt Poker imploded in the wake of Black Friday (Lindgren, a partial owner of the site, had been receiving hefty distributions for his ownership shares of FTP) cutting off Lindgren from his cash cow, then allegations of slow-paying and massive debts came to light, with Lindgren suddenly being pulled down from his poker pedestal and tossed into the Chino Rheem scrapheap of poker deadbeats.
Things got so bad for Lindgren that he entered into a Gamblers Anonymous type program to try to cure himself of his vices. Since returning to poker this year Lindgren has been performing at a very high level, with a runner-up showing in the World Poker Tour $25k Championship tournament earlier this year, and now, on Thursday night, a WSOP win in the $5k No Limit Holdem Six-Max tournament. The win marked Lindgren’s fifth cash of the 2013 WSOP and his second career bracelet. In 2013 Lindgren has earned over $1.3 million in tournaments.
The path to the bracelet was definitely a difficult one for Erick, as he had to contend with an extremely tough final table that included Lee Markholt, Jonathan Little, and Ryan D’Angelo, along with Allen Bari, Andrew Robl, and Dan Smith, who all finished in the Top 11 of the tournament. The moment didn’t escape Lindgren, and considering what he has been through (and still has to deal with considering his alleged seven-figure debts) his post-game remarks were emotionally charged:
“I had to rebuild from the bottom. I was definitely at the top of the game and took some things for granted… It’s been crazy. Scrounging around in mid-May just hoping to play a bunch of events and now being able to play every day,”
Perhaps one of the most interesting hands of the WSOP occurred in the heads-up part of this tournament, when Lee Markholt folded a Queen on a Q-T-7-T-T board to Lindgren. The hole-card cameras on the live stream showed Lindgren did indeed have the Ten. I can’t think of too many people who could get away from that hand in a heads-up situation at that point in the tournament and neither could Lindgren who stated after the tournament, “… I rivered quads about at the same time and I’m pretty sure that Lee folded top full house, which is what makes him Lee Markholt. I don’t think people understand how good of a player Lee is.”
Unfortunately for Markholt, his incredible read would not propel him on to the win, as Lindgren still managed to dispatch the poker pro, denying Lee his first WSOP bracelet.
Here is a look at the final table payouts from the tournament:
1. Erick Lindgren – $606,317
2. Lee Markholt – $374,960
3. Jonathan Little – $238,833
4. Connor Drinan – $157,274
5. Vasile Buboi – $106,830
6. Ryan D’Angelo – $74,768
