Is the online poker monopoly over?
As Full Tilt Poker has lost some 50% of its player base, and PokerStars has seen a 25% drop in overall traffic since they were forced out of the US market, the entire industry is wondering how the void will be filled –if it will be filled at all!
One thing is for certain; the online poker rooms that had virtually no chance of challenging the two Alpha-Males of online poker now see their opening, and even though PokerStars has maintained its #1 spot, and Full Tilt is also holding strong at #2, the gap between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’ in online poker has been closed dramatically. And this has happened with virtually the entire US population of online poker players sitting on the sidelines; not yet ready to commit to a new US-friendly poker room like Bodog, Lock Poker, or Doyles Room.
You can see this new playing field take shape as what were once Front-Page banners advertising PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker have been replaced by advertisements pointing you toward the “best Cake Poker signup code” and other promotions that had before been relegated to the bottom of the page –and just like in real estate, when it comes to poker site advertising it’s all about location, location, location!
In the coming months I would expect to see the top five to ten online poker networks shift dramatically, and if US players recover their funds and feel secure about depositing we might just see the Merge Gaming Network, Bodog, or the Cake Poker Network challenge PokerStars for the top spot!
