Matt Waxman first American to win WPT Paris
On Sunday US poker pro matt Waxman became the first American player to win a World Poker Tour tournament in Paris after outlasting a starting field of 312 players and defeating a final table that included European sensation Martin Jacobson. Waxman pocketed nearly $750k in prize-money for the win as well as a seat into the $25k WPT Championship at the Bellagio.
Jacobson, who came into the final table on an extreme short-stack, was the first player eliminated after shoving with A/J only to run into Miko Sundel’s Pocket jacks on the 27th hand of the day. Once the most accomplished and dangerous hit the rail play opened up a bit and within a couple dozen hands the tournament was down to just two players, Matt Waxman and Hugo Lemaire.
Waxman took a commanding lead into heads-up play, 7.8 million to Lemaire’s 1.5 million, and was able to keep the pressure on and eliminate Lemaire after rivering a flush to best Lemaire’s top-pair. In addition to the prize-money, Lemaire also received an entry into the WPT Amneville tournament worth €3,500.
Here is a look at the final table payouts for the 2011 WPT Grand Prix de Paris:
- 1st: Matt Waxman: €518,750
- 2nd: Hugo Lemaire: €311,100
- 3rd: Fred Magen: €211,100
- 4th: Byron Kaverman: €155,550
- 5th: Mikko Sundell €133,330

The next stop on the World Poker tour will be held at the Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. The Borgata Poker Open is a $3,500 buy-in tournament and one of the most popular stops on the WPT in recent years drawing over 1,000 entrants in 2009 and 2010.
